The Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents
Riding a motorcycle is inherently more dangerous than other modes of transportation, but that’s one it’s attractions. You know, when you get on a bike, that you’re at greater risk than other motorists. By understanding some of the common causes of motorcycle accidents, you can often avoid unnecessary injury.
I ride and know first hand how motorcyclists are mistreated and disrespected on all roads in New Jersey.
Factors that Contribute to Motorcycle Accidents
Studies routinely indicate that the bulk of motorcycle crashes are caused by:
- Left-turn accidents — This is the most common cause of injury to motorcyclist son the road. It can take two different forms—a car may wrongfully make a left turn into the path of a motorcyclist who’s traveling through an intersection, or a motorist may fail to yield to a motorcyclist who has the right-of-way to make a left turn.
- Use of excessive speed — Whether by bikers or other motorists, speeding limits reaction time and makes it more difficult for parties to notice other vehicles on the road. It also leads to greater impact and more serious injury.
- Substance abuse — Alcohol has a detrimental effect on your reaction time as well, and can cause fatigue.
- Unsafe lane changes and lane splitting — Bikers and other drivers can change lanes without exercising due caution. With lane splitting (illegal in New Jersey), motorcyclists drive between lanes, often between cars.
- Open car doors — Frequently, a motorist will park on the side of the road and open a door into the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
- Roadway defects — This can involve potholes, loose gravel, water or ice/snow, or defective signage.
